1. Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo Legion Go might be a Steam Deck rival but it looks a lot like a Nintendo Switch. This likeness is attributed to its narrow bezel, robust kickstand at the rear, and detachable controllers. However, despite these similarities, the Legion Go exudes a more refined and sophisticated appearance when compared to the playful and toy-like aesthetic of the Nintendo Switch.

Measuring 11.8 x 5.15 x 1.61 inches and weighing 1.88 pounds with the controllers attached, the Legion Go boasts a substantial size and weight. Nevertheless, despite its dimensions, the Go feels you remarkably lightweight when lifted, thanks to its excellent weight distribution—similar to the Steam Deck. The plastic body of the device is robust, and although it has a smooth texture, I never had the sensation that it might accidentally slip from my grasp.

2. Display

The Legion Go boasts a Large 8.8-inch display which provides you with a vivid and vibrant image. In comparison to competitors like the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and AyaNeo 2S, which feature 7-inch displays, the Legion Go’s screen is notably larger. Not only does it offer a generous size, but the 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and impressive 144Hz refresh rate surpass what its rivals provide.

When indulging in games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Forza 5 , the Legion Go’s massive screen truly enhances the gaming experience. While the display is not OLED, it exhibits commendable contrast between darker and lighter elements. The colors were lively, and the clear resolution enabled me to discern details in the environments of the games.

Our laboratory tests confirm my personal observations. When we directed our Klein-10 colorimeter towards the Legion Go’s screen, we discovered it maintained an average brightness of 476 nits. Although this falls slightly short of the advertised 500 nits, it remains sufficiently bright. In comparison, the Asus ROG Ally displayed an average brightness of 465 nits. However, the new Steam Deck OLED surpassed both with an impressive 597 nits of brightness.

Header Cell – Column 0Lenovo Legion GoSteam Deck OLEDAsus ROG Ally
Nits (brightness)476597465
sRGB151.8%143.7%108.6%
DCI-P3107.5%101.8%76.9%
Delta-E0.210.220.17

Regarding color saturation, the Legion Go achieved 151.8% of theRGB color gamut and 107.5% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space (closer to 100% is optimal for both). In terms of color accuracy, the screen scored 0.21 on the Delta-E test (closer to 0 is better).

The Asus ROG Ally, with percentages of 108.6% (sRGB), 76.9% (DCI-P3), and a Delta-E score of 0.17, produced colors that were less oversaturated but still visually appealing. On the other hand, the Steam Deck OLED exhibited results similar to the Legion Go. Nevertheless, its colors appeared more vibrant on Valve’s handheld device, thanks to its OLED display.

3. Performance

The Legion Go we tested features the powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, with the same one found in the high-end Asus ROG Ally. With unparalleled power armed with graphical processors from RDNATM, which characterizes lenovo Legion Go with high performance power .Alongside 16GB of RAM and 512GB / 1TB storage capacity, one would anticipate excellent gaming performance. While the handheld from Lenovo doesn’t completely fall short in this regard, achieving optimal performance for most games requires some tweaking of settings.

Nevertheless, don’t anticipate the Legion Go to smoothly run games at 2,560 x 1,600 resolution with high frame rates. Even with the performance mode activated, Doom Eternal, despite being well-optimized, struggled at a modest 15 to 20 frames per second. Adjusting the resolution to 1,920 x 1200 and configuring the device’s TDP to 30W resulted in a more acceptable 30 to 45 fps.
By further lowering the resolution to 1,280 x 800p, frame rates improved to the mid-70s. Although this resolution suits a 7-inch display, it falls short on the Legion Go’s larger 8.8-inch screen, revealing low-resolution textures more prominently.

Playing graphically demanding games at 1,200p and achieving 45 frames per second on a handheld is objectively impressive, surpassing the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch. However, achieving such performance requires adjustments to both in-console and in-game settings. While this flexibility is a selling point for PC players, those who prefer a straightforward gaming experience may find the out-of-the-box performance somewhat lackluster.

4. Battery Life

The battery life of a handheld gaming device is a crucial factor, and the Legion Go 8.8 excels in this aspect. Equipped with a high-capacity battery and intelligent power management features, the device offers extended gaming sessions without constant interruptions for charging reliance on performance settings. the Legion Go 8.8 keeps pace with all types of your gaming, providing hours of uninterrupted gameplay on a single charge.

During our battery assessment, where we conducted uninterrupted web surfing at a screen brightness of 150 nits, the Legion Go exhibited a runtime of 4 hours and 06 minutes. However, when subjected to the graphically intensive PCMark 10 benchmarks, designed to simulate gaming sessions, the duration decreased to 1 hour and 51 minutes. These outcomes align with those typically observed in gaming laptops.

The efficient use of power-saving techniques ensures optimal battery performance, maximizing uptime without compromising on gaming performance. Whether you’re on the go or lounging at home, the Legion Go 8.8 remains your faithful companion, ready to immerse you in the world of gaming whenever inspiration strikes. With its battery life the device stands as a beacon of convenience in the realm of handheld gaming.

5. Connectivity and Ports

The Legion Go 8.8 ensuring seamless integration with your gaming system. Whether you’re pairing wireless controllers or streaming content from your favourite services, the Legion Go 8.8 provides unparalleled flexibility and convenience.

In terms of ports, the Legion Go comes with two USB-C ports, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack. The hardshell case that comes with the Legion Go has a bottom opening that aligns perfectly with the handheld’s USB-C port on the bottom side. Due to this, you can charge the device even when it’s inside its case, which is extremely convenient.

6. Software and User Experience

The Lenovo Legion Go, running on Windows 11, it providing users with the versatility to run a wide range of Windows-compatible games and programs. Similar to the Asus ROG Ally and AyaNeo 2S, this device boasts immediate compatibility with Windows 11, allowing users to seamlessly run any Windows-compatible game or program right out of the box.

While the built-in launcher ensures a smooth experience, the broader Windows 11 environment may pose challenges for controller inputs outside of Legion Space, as Windows was not originally designed with controllers in mind. Touch controls are available but might feel less optimal on a device equipped with buttons and analog sticks. Nevertheless, the Legion Go compensates for this with a user-friendly interface, featuring a comprehensive settings menu for customization. Users can adjust performance modes, display resolution, refresh rates, controller mappings, lighting effects, and more within Legion Space.

The Legion Space launcher simplifies navigation with controller inputs, providing a hassle-free way to jump into your games. It efficiently connects to popular gaming services like Xbox, Epic Games, Ubisoft Connect, Steam, GoG, Rockstar Social Club, and Giants Software. Additionally, it supports game purchases from Gamesplanet.com and even allows the acquisition of Android games via the Microsoft Store.

In summary, the Lenovo Legion Go combines the power of Windows 11 compatibility with the convenience of the Legion Space launcher, providing gamers with a straightforward and customizable platform for an immersive gaming experience.
